It Takes a Village

It Takes a Village: How Community Support Shapes the Leaders of Tomorrow

There is a well-known African proverb that states, "It takes a village to raise a child." In the context of modern education, this proverb is more relevant than ever. The journey of a high school student in Benin, striving to pass their exams and secure a better future, is rarely a solitary endeavor. It is supported, directly and indirectly, by a vast network of parents, teachers, local partners, and global sponsors.

At the NewGen Legacy Scholars Foundation, we recognize that our scholarships are just one piece of the puzzle. True, lasting impact happens when an entire community rallies around a student's potential.

The Role of Parents and Guardians
Often, the unsung heroes in our scholars' success stories are their parents or guardians. These are adults who value education immensely but have found themselves constrained by limited financial resources. They make daily sacrifices to ensure their children have a quiet place to study or a small meal before an exam. Our foundation seeks to partner with these parents. By lifting the financial burden of school fees, we alleviate the stress within the household, allowing parents to focus on providing emotional support and a stable home environment.

The Dedication of Partner Schools
Our success heavily relies on the collaboration with over 1,200 partner schools across the region. Teachers and school administrators are on the front lines. They are the ones who identify the brilliant student who is suddenly missing classes because they cannot afford the uniform. By working closely with these schools, we ensure that our application information reaches the students who need it most. Teachers also play a critical role in providing the recommendations and academic transcripts required for our transparent selection process.

The Global "Village" of Sponsors
In today's interconnected world, the "village" has expanded globally. Our community of donors includes socially conscious individuals, NGOs, and diaspora professionals from New York to Paris. Their financial contributions are the engine that drives our mission. But more than that, their involvement sends a powerful psychological message to the students: You matter. People you have never even met believe in your potential enough to invest in your future. This global solidarity breaks down the isolation that poverty often brings.

The Ripple Effect of Education
When this diverse community comes together to support a single student, the results are transformative. But the impact doesn't end with the student receiving their BAC. A sponsored student who goes on to university and builds a successful career inevitably becomes a pillar of their own community. They support their family, stimulate the local economy, and often return to become mentors and sponsors for the next generation.

At NewGen Legacy, we are not just distributing funds; we are actively building and nurturing this village. We connect the willing donor with the eager student. We provide the mentorship that bridges the gap between ambition and reality. We invite you to become a part of our community. Whether you are a student ready to apply, a parent seeking help, or a donor looking to make a transparent and lasting impact, there is a place for you in our village. Together, we are empowering the future leaders of Africa.
